Becoming Compulsions
sex_addictionIf you are well posted on the news on any given day you are sure to read or hear about some person whose sexual behavior has made the headlines. Have you ever taken an interest in how one gets to a point where they do these things? How it comes that one can become hooked into doing something that is so far out of the bounds of acceptability?

It starts with stress
All people from time to time face events in our lives that make us to feel stress. Sometimes, we almost not realize that we are experiencing it. It is difficult to have a conscious awareness in the exact moment that stress happens when we are facing it. Try to remember how many times after something happened to you did you later think, "Hey I was under a lot of stress back then"?

People that are under stress have to seek relief
Stress always requires that we look for a form relief so that we may feel ease. We all know when one of our primary needs is not being met, for example, being hungry, thirsty, tired, or cold, that we'll search for ways of meeting that need. What we may not understand is that this same principle holds true for the other stresses in our life as well.

We will feel an obligation to look for relief for each stress. In order to make some progress we need to realize that each day we face hundreds of little stresses. We have bills to pay, telephone calls to return, commissions to perform, food to buy, work situations, relationships to improve, etc. Each of these stressors, in and of themselves, may not amount to much, or so we think; so, we don't worry or give much thought to them. But whether we recognize it or not, each of these stressors need that we do something to take about needed relief.

Stress is synergistic
Synergy means that the end effect of a set of conditions is larger than when we add each of the conditions together. And stress is like that. The nervousness we experience in our lives will always be much larger than it would be were we to add all the big and little stresses together. That’s why, when we think about it, we may now understand why it is that we can feel stressed out even when we don't have a lot of big stresses in our lives.
