risk_factorsThese factors increase the probability of your having an addiction to a legal or an illegal drug:

• Personality. If you have some psychological problem, like depression, the deficit of attention, hyperactivity disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder, you're more likely to become dependent on drugs. Children who show their aggression, a shortage of self-control and a difficult temperament may be at greater risk of drug addiction.

• Social environment. Especially for young people, the pressure of coeval is a strong factor in the beginning to use and abuse drugs. A deficiency of parents' care may increase the risk of addiction as can a lack of parental control.

  • Anxiety, loneliness and depression. Using drugs can be a way of coping with these painful psychological feelings.

• Genetics. Drug addiction is more common in some families with drug and alcohol problems.

• Type of drug. Some drugs, such as heroin and cocaine, more quickly result in physical addiction than do others.
