| What is Marijuana? | Marijuana is a greenish-gray mixture of the dried, splintered leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of Cannabis Sativa. It often called pot, herb, grass, reefer, weed, Mary Jane, or MJ. The most users smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes called joints, some use pipes or water pipes called bongs. Marijuana cigars usually called blunts. They become very popular nowadays. Making blunts, people slice open cigars and mixed the tobacco with marijuana, usually combined it with another drug, such as cocaine for smoke. Marijuana also is used to brew tea and is sometimes mixed into foods. The major active chemical in marijuana is delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which causes the mind-altering effects during the intoxication. THC is also the psychoactive ingredient in hashish.
What are the Effects of Marijuana Use?
Marijuana's effects may be noticed from 1 to 3 hours after the drug enters the brain. If marijuana is taken in food or drink, the short-term effects begin more slowly as a rule in 1/2 to 1 hour and lasts about 4 hours. Smoking marijuana deposits several times more THC into the blood than does eating or drinking the drug. In few minutes after inhaling marijuana smoke, an individual's heart begins beating more rapidly. The bronchial passages relax and become enlarged, and blood vessels in the eyes extended, eyes become red. The heart rate, normally 70 to 80 beats per minute, may increase by 20 to 50 beats per minute or, in some cases, even more than twice. If you take other drugs with marijuana this effect can be more noticeable.
THC acts in the brain's reward system and causes euphoric feelling. THC activates the reward system in the same way that nearly all drugs of abuse do, by stimulating brain cells to release the chemical dopamine.
People, who use marijuana, may feel pleasant feelings, sounds and colors may seem more intense and time appears to pass very slowly. The marijuana user's mouth feels very dry and the addicted one may suddenly feel hungry and thirsty. The hands may be rather cold and trembling. The euphoria passes after a little time and then the user may feel sleepy or depressed. Sometimes marijuana use produces distrust, anxiety, fear or panic. Using marijuana deteriorates a person's ability to shift attention from one thing to another, to form memories and recall events.
THC usually disrupts moving coordination and balance by binding to receptors in the cerebellum and basal ganglia, disrupt the coordination of movement and time reaction. Marijuana intoxication can cause bad after effects on the brain and body. The researches show that nearly 6 - 11 percent is positive for THC test. In many of these cases, alcohol is detected as well.
