| What are Hallucinogens? | Hallucinogens are drugs that cause a strong distortions in a person's feeling of reality (hallucinations). Under the influence of hallucinogens, people see images, hear sounds and feel sensations that seem real but do not exist.
Some hallucinogens have a rapid, intense emotional swings of a mood.
The effects of hallucinogens cause by disrupting the interaction of nerve cells and the neurotransmitter serotonin. Hallucinogens have a harmful impact on the brain and spinal cord. The serotonin system is complicated in the control of behavioral, perceptual, and regulatory systems, including mood, hunger, sensory perception, sexual behavior, muscle control and body temperature.
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide or LSD is the most commonly used drug equated with the term "hallucinogen" and is the most popular in this class of drugs. It is the typical hallucinogen such as psilocybin and ibogaine.
