What is Bulimia?

bulimia Bulimia Nervosa is an eating disorder which is characterized by reappearing unsuitable behavior to control the weight. In 1979 Bulimia Nervosa was first characterized by a professor Gerald Russell who worked at the Royal Free Hospital in London. Professor. “Bulimia” is a Latin word which gets its roots from the Greek word “boulimia” which means “extreme hunger”. Bulimia can occur together with other psychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, self-injurious behavior or substance dependence.

 More than 80% of bulimics are vomiting. Other behaviors include misapplication of laxatives, fasting and excessive exercise. Bulimia addicted usually eats too much food in a short amount of time and then tries to prevent weight gain by purging.


 Purging might be done in these ways:

• abuse of laxatives, pills, or liquids that increase fast food moves through the body and leads to a bowel movement;
• making oneself throw up.
Bulimia Nervosa is a disease that is often found in girls of later adolescence and early adulthood. It is very rarely detects among men. To prevent the otherwise inevitable after effects of weight gain there are periods of food limitation and often vomiting, laxative abuse or excessive exercising. Bulimia addicted people usually leave the table directly after a meal. When vomiting is used the binges may become frequent with repeating cycles over several hours in which the sufferer eats until full, then vomits and eats again.The lives of bulimic girls' become more chaotic and focus increasingly on the bulimic behaviour. They generally find their own behaviour disgustful and are deeply ashamed of it so they keep their addiction secret.
 Vomiting usually causes a chronic blister just below the knuckle where it rubs on the upper teeth. Repeated vomiting quite often leads to swelling of the salivary glands that shows as soft swellings at the base of the ears or just under the chin. If it goes on for many years the swellings become hard and permanent.

To prevent weight gain a bulimic person may also use these ways:
• using  pills to pass urine;
• exercising a lot;
• eating very little or not at all.
