Anorexia Nervosa disorder needs to be diagnosed and treated as soon as possible because eating disorders are most successfully treated when diagnosed early. Some patients may need hospitalization to stabilize weight but some can be treated as outpatients. Weight gain of one to three pounds per week is considered safe and desirable. In some cases medication is necessary, especially where there are serious compulsive symptoms or depression. Treatment by the family doctor is possible, although sometimes a psychologist or psychiatrist experienced in eating disorders is necessary.

  Psychotherapy is a very important  type of treatment for anorexia because it helps you to overcome fears, identify the problem and solve it  and test new skills.

Behavior therapy  used  to change the behavior of self-starvation. The therapist teaches how to substitute relaxation and other coping strategies for the excessive exercising or fasting of anorexia.

Cognitive behavior therapy makes a person more self-aware of relationship to food.  It is desirable to keep a food diary of your thought processes about food.

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy during which therapist treats a small group of clients together as a group. It allows talking to other people who suffer anorexia. Group therapy can give you a support of the people with a same problem. It helps to reduce the isolation you may feel about your disorder.

Support groups are led by health professionals or trained volunteers which assist by allowing you to talk to others.

Medication treats the  results of anorexia and its symptoms. Antidepressant drugs treat the depression and anxiety that often accompanies or causes anorexia.
